Although I’ve already happily shared these news on social media, I wanted to write this post to condensate the reviews that Abuelita’s Gift and El regalo de abuelita have received so far. I{m also doing this, because this blog is in a way a “journal” of my own journey as a writer, and getting these reviews represents a special milestone for me and for the books.
I’m so excited because so far we’ve received 2 starred reviews and beautiful words regarding Julieta and Abuelita’s story. I feel so honored that this book has gotten such a special recognition and I hope that once it releases it will be loved by children and parents just as much as everyone who’s participated on this project loves it. 💜

SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL
The first review we received was from School Library Journal and it was a STARRED review 🌟 My first one ever!
Gianna, my editor, shared the news with be some days before it was officially published on SLJ website at the beginning of July. I couldn’t believe it! This was the verdict:
🌟 “A heartwarming story for Día de Muertos celebrations and displays.“
Isn’t this lovely? If you want to read the full review, please click here.
However, not only Abuelita’s Gift got such a positive review from SLJ, but also El regalo de abuelita did, and it was actually published at the end of May. I’m very happy and thankful that our Spanish edition got a lovely review as well. The verdict:
“Highly recommended for Spanish-language collections, especially where more books about Día de Muertos or grief and loss are sought.“
If you want to access the full review, please click here.
In addition to this distinction, Abuelita’s Gift has been featured in two lists of exceptional titles and exemplary picture books put together by SLJ. You’ve no idea how excited and grateful I am to see our book in such great company.

KIRKUS REVIEWS
By mid July we received the great news about another starred review for Abuelita’s Gift, this time from Kirkus Reviews. The verdict:
🌟 “A touching tribute to the pain of losing a loved one—and the joys of honoring them.“
I’m so glad to see that the message of the story has been delivered and received. I’m really honored to be able to share about the beautiful Mexican tradition of Día de Muertos with readers by introducing them to Julieta and Abuelita’s story of love.
