Although March On With Mentor Texts happened during the month of March, I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to share about my experience with it this year, even if it’s a bit late. As some of you might remember, I participated in this event for the first time in 2023, with the topic of Telling Stories with Spanish, in which I highlighted Santiago’s Dinosaurios. If you’re interested, you can check out that post here.
For those who are not familiar, March On With Mentor Texts is an event organized by Rate Your Story which takes place every March. Its purpose is to promote the study of mentor texts, as a valuable resource for writers. So, each day, one author shares about a specific topic regarding writing and they highlight five mentor texts and how each of them ties to the theme, including their own books. For example, this year, there was a post about Intersecting Art and Science with Lydia Lukidis, Exploring Multilayers with Andrea J. Loney, Using Quotes in your Writing with Vivian Kirkfield or the Use of Lyrical Language with Roxanne Troup, among many other great posts.
As you can tell, by the end of the month there’s a lot of knowledge learned and dozens of books discovered. In addition to this, participants get to know about new releases or soon to be published books, they meet new authors, and they get to participate in prize giveaways from Ask Me Anything sessions, to manuscript critiques, or signed copies of books. As you can see, learning is not the only reward of taking part on this event.
For 2024 I participated as a contributor with my book Abuelita’s Gift: A Día de Muertos story, and my theme was Sharing Tradition and Culture through Picture Books. I selected this topic, because my soon to be released book is about the tradition of Día de Muertos in México, so I wanted to highlight different books who also include traditions or culture as an essential part of the story, some of them written by fellow Musas. If you’d like to read more about my book selection for the post and how I tied in my own book, I invite you to read my article here. I hope you’ll like it. I invite you to check out the rest of the posts, there’s a lot of value in all of those articles.
As usual, I’m grateful to my friend, Lynne Marie, for inviting me to be part of this amazing FREE resource for writers. There’s so much value on the Rate your Story blog, a real treasure for everyone in the writing community.
Thanks for reading!
