MARCH ON WITH MENTOR TEXTS

One of the most important advices that I have received and would give to any writer is to read many books in the genre they want to write. In my case it’s picture books. Why? Because by reading the work of others you get to learn a lot, like:

1. Different story structures and styles for telling a story.
2. The topics that are attractive to the market.
3. How text and illustrations work together.
4. The word count other writers include in their books.
5. What publishers are printing what type of books, etc.

So, as you can see, reading books written by other writers is a valuable way to improve your own writer skills and become a better author, thus being able to create stronger stories. What is even better, is if you get to read books that could be consider “mentor texts” for the specific story you want to write.

With this in mind, I want to share with you this valuable resource which is available every March: March on With Mentor Texts by Rate your Story. How does this work? Each day of the month, a new blog post about the usage of mentor texts will be uploaded on the blog by an author, illustrator, editor or kidlit professional. Imagine the knowledge you’ll be able to gather on these coming 31 days!

In addition to this, if you register as a participant and you comment on the posts, you’ll be elegible for different amazing prizes. Sounds great, isn’t it?

Besides this, I’m also thrilled to share that this year I was invited to contribute with a blog post for one day. My topic will be using Spanish in Storytelling for Bilingual Stories, but it can really apply to any language.
